Research: Tours

Tours help promote an artists album as well as themselves. One of my favourite tours especially is The Beyonce Experience tour.

This is a section from Beyonce's tour.

Shooting Day 5

We just needed something to fill the last verse of our video so our artist and camera man tom when to shoot. As we was cutting it very close we had to search for an area around college that seemed nice and a strong backdrop to use for our mise en scene. The boys then found an area over a canal near the college whitch was nice to fill the last section of our music video as it in some aspects could be seen as beautiful scenery with the autumn leaves on the floor and the high angle view of the canal behind the artist. We got a variety of shots also with lots of different movement, angles and camera placing so overall it was quite a success for the short time that we had left till the deadline.

Production: Clips Of Us That We'll Use (Style Of Editing)

In our video we want to have clips of all of us towards the end. I would like for the the edits to be really fast. I have an example of this with Hit-Boy - Jay Z Interview.

Shooting day 4

We had to get creative here seeing as time was running out and we didnt have enough footage to finish the video. It was also raining so we had to think of something other than green screen and also wasn't obvious that we had shot in the college so we decided to use the black curtain in the green screen room as a backdrop for the middle section of our video. we also decided to not use it a lot in our video it was simply something to fill a small section.

Research: Record Labels

On http://www.getmeexposure.com/hi-this-is-my-home-slider-post/ it states that angels team is putting in hard work to get him to concerts/shows and allowing his fans to see him and see his updates more often. They are doing this to allow his fans to feel closer to the artist.

Angel is signed to island records and here is some of their details (taken from wikipedia):

Record Labels

Artists that are signed to record labels have to depend on hem alot for promotion, equipment, facilities and links. So a record label can pretty much determine the success of an artist if they work hard to promote their artists or not. Also record labels have to suit the artists all have positives and negatives. When signing a contract for a record label there are many things to consider.

Some shots of Angel and Wretch 32 recording a new video.
You can see some of his performance being captured and the clothing is very urban/vintage.
His look attracts many under 25 year old aged women which is his target audience.

Other research

Also some other research on Angel, I found out that he is gearing up for his 1st single, ‘Go In, Go Hard‘ ft Wretch 32, Angel and his team are stepping up the promotion surrounding the artist’s project, with daily appearances and/or content since the start of the year. Signed to Island Records and having written for many such as Pixie Lott, Roll Deep and Jason Derulo to name a few, Angel has enjoyed previous air play and internet buzz with mixtape, 7 Minutes Before Time and tracks released a year ago.

How clips will be used in the video (capoeira)

We will be using clips such as this to enhance the visual aspects of the video throughout the versus's. Also to make it more detailed and have a nice effect with the beat of the track we will be slowing down some of these home videos to show the moment, beauty and intensity of some of these clips. These clips consist of recordings of my martial arts group. The martial arts is capoeira and my group is called Ginga De Quilombo.

This is the kind of feel we are aiming for and at key moments we will slow he clips down to visually see the movements and intensive moments in this type of martial arts. I have shown some people this video and they said they would love to see this in a music video as it creates visual effects and looks beautiful. 'Especially in slow motion' said one of the people.

Research: Mixtapes

Taken from Wilkipedia -  "In hip hop's earliest days, the music only existed in live form, and the music was spread via tapes of parties and shows. Hip hop mixtapes first appeared in the mid-1970s in New York City, featuring artists such as Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaata. As more tapes became available, they began to be collected and traded by fans. In the mid-1980s, DJs, such as Brucie B, began recording their live music and selling their own mixtapes, which was soon followed by other DJs such as Kid Capri and Doo Wop. Ron G moved the mixtape forward in the early 1990s by blending R&B a cappellas with hip hop beats (known as "blends"). Blend tapes became increasingly popular by the mid-1990s, and fans increasingly looked for exclusive tracks and freestyles on the tapes. Also since the 1990s, it describes releases used to promote one or more new artists, or as a pre-release by more established artists to promote upcoming "official" albums. In the hip hop scene, mix tape is often displayed as a single term mixtape"

Angel released a mixtape on the 17th August 2012 called "Any Minute Now". I think this was a good name for the mixtape and it leaves his fans anticipating for the release for his debut album "Time After Time" due to be released some time this year. It is a four track mixtape less than the one he did previously this year, which was titled "7 Minutes Before Time". On this mixtape urban UK artists such as Maxsta, Wiley, Temps, Giggs, Scorcher, Cleo Sol & G FRSH were featured. By having such known artists on his mixtapes builds up his reputation and makes him more well known. Whilst making these mixtapes he was still signed to Island Records (still is now), which probably shows however that he had the power to get such artists due to being signed which involves being connected to prominent people in the music industry. I would imagine that being an independent artist would involve a lot more of their contribution only due to not being signed and not having all the equipment or connections to produce a mixtape that has a variety of artists featured.

There are sites that provide fans to download mixtapes from artist of their choice. For example, "DatPiff.com" (US) and "HoodTapes.com" (UK).

Research: Angel Choice FM Take Over

I was listening to Choice FM yesterday and Angel took over DJ E Plus' position. Choice FM from time to time give artists the opportunity or ask them to do a "Take Over", where they create their own playlist and play it for the listening audience. I think this is very clever as it benefits both Choice FM and Angel. Choice FM probably gain more listeners and more credibility whilst Angel benefits as he gets more recognition, for example, for those people who don't know who he is, may want to do research on him and then find out that "he's the guy that sang that Wonderful  tune" lol.

Although Choice FM give listeners the option to listen back to shows that they have missed, they only last for 7 Days after the original show has aired.

Research: Amplification, Illustration Or Disjuncture?

Out of them all I would say my favorite type of video is 'Amplification'. This is because many of the music videos that follow this have deeper meanings and are very creative. However, that is not to say that Illustration and Disjuncture types of videos aren't as creative.

One of my favorite music videos right now that use elements of amplification is
Emeli Sande - My Kind Of Love.

The story line depicts a strong friendship. "Cause when you've given up, and no matter what you do it's never good enough, when you never thought that it could ever get this tough, that's when you feel my kind of love" she sings over the piano-laden beat.

The songstress said her inspiration for the video came from her time as a medicine student.

"During my time studying medicine, I found it hard to write, but one of the things that inspired me were the patients and the interaction that they had with their loved ones during their time of illness," she shares. "When people arrived at the hospital, money and status became irrelevant and only health mattered, which sparked an honesty between people which was amazing. This interaction, declaration of support and love, was the inspiration for 'My Kind of Love' and something I wanted to try and portray in this video." - Emeli Sande

When she's walking through the hospital at the beginning, to me it shows her thinking about something. Its almost like she's sharing her story with the audience. And that's the same when she's on the merry go round and she's by herself. It could symbolise her wanting time to herself to just pour her heart out to the audience. I also noticed that in many of the scenes where she's by herself her facial expressions are serious, stern and unhappy as to say she's going through some sort of emotional pain. However the scenes where she's with her friend who seems to have an illness, she's smiling and happy. I think she does this to show that she wants to be brave for her friend. I realised that her friend had cancer as Sande is seen giving her a wig. Sande makes a reference to how she feels about her friend through the lyrics and her friends illness through the music video which I think is very effective. For example, she say's "but don't ever question if my heart beats only for you, it beats only for you", and in the video we see her friend lying down on a hospital bed with a monitor on her finger which checks the pulse and is also connected to the heart. I think that was very clever as again it has a deeper meaning. The lyrics also say "I can't buy you love, don't even want to try". I think in the music video this lyric was expressed very well. For example, Sande goes to the park with her friend and takes her one a car journey. I believe this is supposed to show that she wants to make her friend happy emotionally rather than 'buying' her material things that probably won't have that much of an effect on her. I also noticed that in most scenes Sande is dominant which shows that she tending to her friend. For example, when they are in the car a cut away is shown alongside a close up, where Sande is sat at the front and her friend is at the back. Another example is where an over the shoulder shot is shown whilst Sande is speaking to her friend. Again in this part we see more of Sande, I guess to show that she is looking after her and obviously has some sort of bond or relationship with her. In my opinion this video is very powerful not only because of the message but because its a fairly low budget video but Sande still managed to put her point across to her audience and this is something that I've noticed in many of her other music videos. For example, Next To Me, Heaven, Daddy, Beneath Your Beautiful ect.

Shooting day 3

This was the day we planned on doing on the greenscreen. I was the Camera man for this shoot. Miss had already given us our warning about shadows and how it would affect editing it so we caught many different basetracks with many different camera distances, and adjustments of lighting however we still sadly couldn't get rid of all the shadows no matter what we tried.

another great music video

This is another great music video that uses loads of great camera angles, shots and effects. It is edited to the beat very well and the basic concept behind the music video is simple yet effective. I think that we could incorporate aspects of this music video into ours for example the amount of different shot types they show within a short space of time, when the song slows down so does the pace of the editing. I think this music video is relevant to ours as the music video has a really happy feel to it and it does this without throwing to much in your face and keeping it really simplistic

Good simple music video

Recently whilst watching MTV Dance I came across this music video which I thought used great slo-motion effects and really good use of transisitions. In this music video they also use great colour filters that I would like to incorparate into my music video. As well as this they also use some great point of view shots which I think we could use to improve the look and feel of our music video especially because the concept of our music video is to give it a look that feels like it is home recorded footage.
This music video also does not have alot of variations of different activities it is just watching people sky dive for the whole music video and yet with the use of transitions, colour filters and slow-motion effects we are glued to the screen.

Research: Artist involvement

Angel has recently been at the MOBOS

He also took part in a concert that was held in brixton academy that I blogged about before. All this involvement is excellent for his fan base which would love going to his concerts and events in which he takes part in (MOBO's)

All artists should have concerts and shows to connect with their fans more than just in an online way, its also a way to make money as an artist and be majorly promoted in the industry and anyone else watching.

Research: VEVO

The concept for VEVO is to attract more high-end advertisers. This is why at the beginning of their videos there are always adverts. I've realised that even though they beneficial for the company they can be annoying majority of the time. Especially for those who want to watch a music videos straight away. VEVO is currently available in the UC, Canada, UK, Ireland, Austrailia, New Zealand, South African and Brazil.

VEVO also recognise videos that have reached the mark of 100 million views on Youtube released through VEVO channels.

Research: SBTV

SB.TV Global Ltd, also known as SB.TV or SmokeyBarz, is a company run by a small team of young people. Most of its content can be seen on its own YouTube channel which was created on November 2, 2006 or the official SB.TV website. Much of the content includes unprofessional footage, or 'street-shot' freestyle raps and music videos. However, even though its earlier uploaded videos contained entirely amateur footage, the channel's latest uploads contains some professional recordings.

SB.TV was founded in 2006 by Jamal Edwards when he began filming rap freestyles with a handycam, which he would then upload to his YouTube account. For the first three years Edwards acted alone to provide amateur footage regarding many British grime artists, such as Dizzee RascalWileyChipmunk and Tinchy Stryder, with the first SB.TV video being uploaded in February 2007. As the channel began to attract more attention, it also began offering lifestyle interviews and event coverage, and a production team of ten people was established as a result.

Research: How Artists Are Promoted On Youtube

So I was browsing through Youtube, and I came across Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love lyrics. Normally at the beginning of Youtube videos there are adverts. Coincidentally the advert was about Angel's song "Wonderful".
The advert says that it is available for download. I believe that this is effective as most people have smartphones so they just download it straight away from their phones.

The advert also displays sections of the song and music video. This is good promotion wise as people who have never heard the song or seen the music video can get a sneak peek of it and this may make them want to watch the full video. This is good as it always allows more views on Angels VEVO channel. It also says that it is available on iTunes.

Research: Comparison Of Music Videos From The 90's and 00's..

I have been looking at Jay Z's music videos lately. This is because I believe he is the only rapper that started from the 90's that is consistent leading to him still provide music for his fans right now. While I was watching the music videos I noticed the quality of the videos had changed over the years. For example when I looked at the "In My Lifetime" video the quality was very poor due to lack of technology in the mid 90's, however by the time he released "Hard Knock Life" in 1998 the camera quality had improved. In my vlogs I will be explaining and discussing how his videos have changed over the years in terms of camera, editing and mise en scene. I will also be exploring it in dept by looking at Laura Muley, Andrew Goodwin and Carol Vernallis' theories.

JAY Z - IN MY LIFETIME (1995)

And the reason why the nature of the video seems very simple is because he was obviously on a very low budget, and due to having more money now and being an established artist in the industry he is able to  have high budget videos that reflect on his lavish lifestyle. For example "Roc Boys".

A video that is similar to our genre that i believe shares some of the similar attributes to the locations we used is Coldplay's Paradise

They Have a basetrack of the elephant standing in front of a graffiti background that is quite similar to ours. Throughout the whole video there is a feel of quite cool, urban, retroness being portrayed which is quite similar to what we aim to try and achieve in our video.

Solo's Twitter Account

Solo's Twitter Account. Tweeted Angel about our first day of filming.

This is our artists twitter page where fans, producers and event promoters and whoever else can contact Solo. This is a perfect way for promotion as millions of people all over the world use twitter. We can share our music via twitter which will be big promotion for out artist.

A T-shirt printing place recently followed Solo on twitter. This could be an ideal opportunity for the t shirt printing ideas for promotion to the artist. Many artists do this for extra money to support any expenses that will help the artist. for example buying new equipment for the recording studio.

Planning: Green Screen Footage

This is the sunset that we want to use when Solomon is singing in front of the green screen. However we only want to use a section of it, so it will be edited on Final Cut Pro to cut it down .

Research: Sections Of Angel's Website ..

I was looking through Angel's site and I noticed that most things had been updated which shows that Angel or his management want him to be interactive with his fans. For example when I last visited the site, the music video to "How Can I Lose" featuring Chipmunk. was featured. Now his music video for his newest single "Time After Time" is now shown on the site. As I looked through the site I realised that there were other things I hadn't seen before. For example he has a gallery of his photos mainly taken through instagram for his fans. I believe this was done so the fans can feel as though they have a personal relationship with him. I've also realised that "Wonderful" is getting more recognition as when I watched the MOBO Awards last night Angel performed the song. I kinda of think that because of this performance "Wonderful" MIGHT go higher on the charts. It is currently at number 9 on the UK Single chart and has peaked number 1 on the UK R&B chart.

Research on Angel

On the 12th of November Angel will be performing alongside some bug names in the music industry. This is a massive opportunity for Angels promotion in his career. BBC 1xtra is putting on a concert in Brixton academy in which anyone can attend. The tickets were free and attracted many young supporters. Angel aims many of his work at young people and women which is the exact audience he will be expecting at this concert. As BBC 1xtra is listened and followed by mostly young people.

Angel's had a storming year crashing into the top 10 UK chart back in July, and topping the UK R&B chart at No.1 and this concert will give him the promotion and recognition he needs to move onto bigger things and more number 1's.
