Andrew Goodwin is a theorist on the
narrative structure of music videos. He states that traditional narrative
analysis (such as Todorov suggesting there is a beginning, middle and end –
normality, problem and resolution) doesn't really apply to pop videos and this
is because the videos are built around songs lyrics; and the singer could act
as a narrator as well as a character in their videos. Also the artist often
looks towards the camera as an attempt to involve the viewer to the
performance.
He states that pop videos are heavily reliant on repetition. One way is that the music video may repeat images along with the way the song repeats the chorus as a way of clearly portraying that this is the chorus of the song. Also there could be repetition between songs (intertextuality) in certain sections or rhymes of the song to point out the particular genre of it. And lastly the repetition of the song itself as in what it is played on for example it played in the TV then on the radio and also there could be a tie in with a movie where the song would be played in the promotion of the movie further proving that music videos couldn't fit the traditional narrative analysis.
He states that some videos may be
different or go beyond the original meaning of the song. He describes this as Disjuncture where there is
little connection between the lyric such as Drake ft Rihanna – Take Care…
This is disjuncture because what they are saying n the lyrics does not comply to whats happening in the video. they discus taking care of someone however there is shots of animals in slow motion which has nothing to do with the lyrics.
He then goes on to describe Amplification which is where the
video introduces new means which does not contradict with the lyric however
adds new layers of meaning to it for example Young Money – Every Girl…
This is amplification because the edits relate/recite the lyrics yet the artists are performing in the video also.
Finally he describes illustration which is where the
song follows the lyric exactly such as Wiley’s – Numbers in action…
Whats happening in the video is exactly whats happening in the lyrics so this would be illustration
