Research: Carol Vernallis' Theory.

BLOGGING TASK ON CAROL VERNALLIS

Vernallis’s theory centers around 4 main concepts which are:

  • Narrative
  • Editing
  • Camera Movement and framing
  • Diegesis

EDITING

She says that editing may match the musical phrases or the beat and that the video may break or disrupt many of the ‘rules’ of continuity editing. She also says that editing may become ‘forgrounded’. This means that the edits may be obvious, to draw attention to themselves as opposed to invisible, continuity editing.

This means that for example the audience may see jumps cuts, breaks of the 30 degree rule, breaks of the 180 degree rule, cutting against the movement, cutting within the lyrics, fancy edits or cuts, extreme jump in time and space, extreme changes in pace, juxtaposed frames, graphic matches and a style of editing that runs through the video and is distinctive to that video.

However things such as smooth transactions, matches on action and an even pace throughout may not be seen.

Here are some examples of music videos that illustrate at least three of her main ideas:

  • Coldplay – Paradise = cuts against the movement, extreme changes in pace, jump cuts

  • Lauryn Hill – Ex Factor =  jump cuts, breaks 30 degree rule, breaks 180 degree rule, slow motion, a style of editing that runs throughout the video.

  • Kanye West – Lost in the world = Jumps cuts, cutting against the time and space, graphic matches, and a style of editing that runs through the video and is distinctive to the video.

  • Azealia Banks – 212 = breaks of the 180 degree rule, a style f editing that runs through the video, jump cuts.

  • Azealia Banks – 1991= jumps cuts, breaks the 30 degree rule, breaks the 180 degree rule, extreme changes in pace, juxtaposed frames, a style of editing that runs through the vide.

  • Kendrick Lamar – Swimming Pools = jump cuts, breaks 30 degree rule, slow motion

  • Lana Del Ray – Blue Jeans = fancy editing, breaks 30 degree rule, slow motion

  • Jay Z & Kanye West – Paris = jump cuts, extreme changes in pace, graphic matches and a style of editing runs through the video.
