Someone who has looked at Representation very closely is
Laura Mulvey and although Representation consists of many parts for example
gender, age, ethnicity, place etc Mulvey’s thery relates specifically to
gender.
Laura Mulvey states “In a world ordered by sexual imbalance,
pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive female. The
determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is
styled accordingly”
What she means by this is that females and males can be
either made to look passive (submissive) or active (dominant). Usually it is
the female that is used to make the male look more dominant and a great example
of this is Rack City by Tyga.
