Research: Carol Vernallis

Carol Vernallis

Someone who has been studying editing and camerawork in videos very closely is Carol Vernallis. She concluded that edits in TV and film are a lot less frequent than that of a music video. She also says that the editing is very closely related to the rhythmic basis of the song.

-          The usual rules of continuity editing are broken so that the users attention is drawn directly to the music video

-          Edits such as wipes and special effects are added to draw attention to the music video

-          We often see jump cuts in the music videos

-          Base tracks are used to give the music video structure

-          The camera may move in time with the music

A Video that show a good example of obvious edits is Bang Bang Bang by Mark Ronson & The Business Intl
