Research: Analysis Of A Music Video

I think the video to Beyonce's 2002 song 'Work It Out' is the best example of the music video form in terms of promotion ect. The music video was directed by Matthew Rolston. It has an overall feel inspired by 1970s glamor and the introduction of pop and funk. The video doesn't really have any relation to the song which makes it a 'disjuncture' type of video.

Its a 'disjuncture' type of video because there is little connection between the lyrics and the actual video. It's a performance video that showcases Beyonce's dancing and singing at a much earlier stage in her career. This song was the lead single from the soundtrack album Austin Powers in Goldmember. Beyonce herself was one of the cast members in the film so this video didn't only promote the film but it promoted her as an actress. Michael Myers who played Austin Powers in the film made a cameo appearance at the beginning of the video where he is sitting in a cinema with Beyonce. This also promotes her as an actress. This is becuase Michael Myers is an Hollywood actor and her being with him boosted her reputation. It promotes her as an actress because it widened her fan base  At various points in the video there are clips from the film which gives the film promotion. For example at 01:15 minutes there is a clip from the film. All of the clips from the film give the video a comedic vibe as they are humorous clips. There is also a male gaze throughout the video with Beyonce wearing a short gold dress, bare legs exposed. At many points throughout the video the camera pans up and down from her face to her thighs.
